The E30 325iX is the AWD E30. My dream one would one caged up to FIA specs but still with rear seats that can fit people. The 330 hp 6 pot from the M235i fit in there. Hydraulic handbrake with the ability to disconnect central diff when pulled (rally spec). Brembos from the Nissan Sentra SE-R. A Borg-Warner transfer box and a transmission pulled out of a BMW with rally gears. Street/rallyable suspension setup. E30 M3 BBS wheels or period appropiate OZ rallys. Chassis reinforcement. Traction control for the street. I wish I had the money...but one day.

Apparently the transfer case in the E30 has a chain drive. I'm guessing because they never expected it to handle more than 200hp. I bet that with the same effort to get your E30 where you want it (which would bring its 3050 pound weight up around 3200), you could have a 3400 pound 235 in the same ballpark, plus have 25 years of chassis and suspension tech.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for adding lightness and think it's insane that "compacts" like the 335 and S4 are 36-3800 pounds, just pointing out that if you're going to that level of modification, you could start with a significantly newer platform and go nuts.

I also say this as someone who wants an impossible combination: light-ish, AWD, FI, 6+ cylinder. Closest I can find are RS3 (which is 5 cylinder and didn't come here) and M235xi. But maybe the Focus RS will be light & torque-vectory enough to make me reconsider turbo 4s.

Btw, noticed you went from "would" to "will", so I expect weekly build updates...

The transfer case in a Super Duty has a chain and can deal with 800 ft-lbs or torque. I fail to see how the presence of a chain limits it's abilities.

The E30X center diff has a habit of not doing it's job as it gets older. It's a viscous coupling too, which is probably too lazy for rallying. They take a second to get their shit together before they start transmitting a useful amount of torque. Maybe there's something more "sporting" that can be installed in it's place?

Forget the turbo six. I know of a shop in IL where the guy specializes in swapped older BMWs. He just completed an E30 ix coupe build with the S54 from an E46 M3. Now THAT sounds amazing.

I'm going out on a wing, but I would guess it isn't as good for high RPM (I realize it is tied to wheel speed and not engine speed, but still). He specifically says HP not torque, so if it is an issue of RPM, he is correct as HP is torque x RPM x constant.

I didn't need to know about this, I am at work right now. Now I can't stand up.

I am in Michigan! I scoured their site, but couldn't find an exact location, I wonder if they bring their cars to any shows around here. Those 2002 M42 engine/transmission mounts for $100 on their site give me dangerous expensive ideas.

I've used their fb page to contact the guy before, I think his name is Jake. We posted a pic on the BMW USA fb page of one of his e21 projects.

I am well aware of the difference between power and torque, and controlling a chain at speed isn't complex. That's why BMW is using it here. My point is that the holding capacity of a transfer case has nothing to do with whether or not it has a chain. It has to do with the design targets of the whole machine. Parts are sized to cope with a certain force, plus some margin. How you get to that holding capacity is up to the idiot engineers that work at the car companies (I'm one of them) and different people take different routes to their solutions. Some like chains, some like meshing gears, some like compacted fairy dust lubricated by the tears of children.

I wasn't saying you didn't know, it was just a guess. I figured chains wouldn't do as well as gears at high speeds. I'm only an EE at a supplier, mechanical things are only a hobby of mine.

"Parts are sized to cope with a certain force, plus some margin." In this car the design "force" is that of a 200hp engine. It's possible they went crazy on the "margin" side to handle 300% of what they need to (like famously overbuilt SBC, 2JZ, etc), it's just not something I would expect by default when dropping in an engine that starts at 330 and will hit 450 with minimal effort.
